Latin Parts

When the Romans ruled Europe, and what we now call Great Britain, ( 00 - 500 A.D.) they spoke Latin. The natives spoke Celtic. After the Romans left, Britons were invaded by Germans called the Angles and Saxons. The natives were left with a language close to what we speak today --- a conglomerate of Latin, Greek, Germanic, Celtic, and Anglo-Saxon.

Latin has left us with not only root parts, but prefixes which are added to the roots to amend meanings. Put the prefixes and the parts together and you get... words! (duh...) However, when you don't know a word, you can dissect its meaning by the prefix and root parts. Or... dissect it enough to guess at the word with context clues. IF you are interested in doing well in spelling or on the SAT's learn these parts!

Let's look at the prefixes first.

PREFIXES:

a = away

ab = away

ante = before

bi = two

circum = around

con = together

contra = against

de = down

dis = apart

e, ex = out

extra = beyond

inter = between

intra = within

ob = against

per = through ( perennial - last through the year)

pre = before

pro - forward

re - back

retro = backward

se = apart

semi = half

sub = under

super = above

trans = across

ultra = beyond

vice = in place of (vice president)

rupt = break, burst

abrupt - sudden

corrupt - changed from good to bad

disrupt - break apart

erupt - burst or break out

incorruptible - not capable of being corrupted

interrupt - break into, hinder

string (strict) - tightly drawn, bind

astringent - tightly together

constrict - bind

stricture - criticism

restrict - keep in boundaries

stringent - tight rules

unrestricted - not tight - open to anyone

viv = alive, live

revive - bring back life

convivial - lively eating and drinking

survive - remain alive

vivacity - alive spirit

vivid - full of life

vivify - enliven

vivisection - operation on something living

vivacious - lively temper

vor - greedy eating

omnivore - eats everything

carnivore - meat eater

devour - greedy eating

insectivorous - eats insects

carnivorous - flesh eating

omnivorous - eats plants or animals

herbivore - eats plants

herbivorous - depends on plants to eat

tort (tors) - twist

tortuous - lots of twists

distort - twist from original shape

retort - reply sharply

torsion - action of twisting

extort - twist out

contortionist - person who twists in weird positions

torture - twist into pain

cide = killer, killing

tyrannicide - killing a tyrant

genocide - racial killing

suicide - self killing

pesticide - pest killing (insects)

insecticide - chemicals to kill insects

homicide - person killing

vict (vinc) = conquer, conclusively showing

victor - conqueror

invincible - unable to be conquer red

convict - conclusively guilty

convince - show conclusively

evict - conquer out

vanquish - conquer overcome

omni - everywhere , all

omniscient - all knowing

omnipotent - all power

omnibus - covering many
