SIR
SYED DAY ALIGARH
MAGAZINE 2008
July
26, 2008
Now
that planning for Sir Syed Day 2008 is underway, it may be an appropriate time to take stock of the situation in 2007 and
plan for 2008 as regards the publication of the Annual Sir Syed Day Souvenir Magazine.
On
the positive side, in bringing out last year’s Aligarh Magazine, the highest number of member associations (Ten out
of Twelve) participated than ever before. We hope that this spirit of cooperation
will prevail in the coming years also and will enable us to continually correct our deficiencies and build on our strengths.
This year, we hope that all member associations of the federation will be involved in this venture and demonstrate the solidarity
of the Federation of AAAs. Being part of this effort is a win-win situation for all.
The revenues generated through advertisements in the magazine can be used by participating association to support their
activities.
The
quality of the magazine continues to improve every year. Due to our policy of adhering to well defined timelines in 2007 we
were able to proof read most of the articles before sending them to press thus typographical errors were minimized
and we were able to ship the magazine to all participating associations in a timely manner. We appreciate the cooperation
of every one in this regard and hope that your support in meeting the deadlines will continue for 2008 edition. Please note
that due to lack of resources we will not be able to send multiple reminders.
In
order to make sure that the high quality of the magazine is maintained, we would like to present the following guidelines.
1.
Participation in the magazine effort is absolutely
voluntary. We are firmly committed to bringing out the magazine and any association that wants to participate has to communicate
this to either of us no later than August 10, 2008.
2.
Participating association will be entitled
to one 4-color page for their organization/100 copies. Photographs from only those participating associations will be included
which are paying for at least 25 copies.
3.
Full page formatted and 'Camera Ready' advertisements
(B&W only) will be accepted from each participating association (see Table). Half or quarter page advertisements are greatly
discouraged. We must also receive all photographs from participating associations by August 20th and the formatted
advertisements by August 25th.
4. We solicit original articles from
Aligarians and non-Aligarians alike on one of the four themes; Aligarh Movement and Sir Syed, Aligarh Personalities (Alive),
Yad-e-Raftagaan (Interesting Aligarians who have passed away) and My Aligarh (First person accounts of life in Aligarh which touch upon some unique aspect of life at AMU). This year
we are also going to accept articles not falling in any one of these four categories and will place them under a ‘Miscellaneous’
category. Because of the non-political and secular nature of the federation, articles which may be hurtful to any religion
will not be considered. Articles in English/Urdu must be at least four printed pages (8x11) in length (single space, two columns). For English, use font Times Roman size 9 with 1-inch
margins on all sides; use bold size 14 for the title and unbold font size 12 for the name of the author and affiliations.
Use the ‘in page’ software for Urdu articles. Handwritten Urdu articles
will not be considered. Every effort should be made to fill up the pages completely so that the need for 'fillers' (Excerpts
from books etc ;) is reduced to an absolute minimum. Please attach a one paragraph biographical description and a passport
size photograph. We reserve the right to edit for clarity and content. Major editing is
consultatively done. Keep
a copy of your article with you, as unpublished articles will not be returned.
Articles
should reach us no later than August 25, 2008.
5. All photographs must be scanned at the maximum
resolution possible (should not be scanned at less than 300 DPI). Please make
sure that the file format is TIFF. If your scanning software has the option for choosing the mode then have it set to CMYK
and not RGB.
6.
All member associations intending to participate
should send a 50% deposit (Check payable to Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations) to Federation by August 31, 2008.
Our
magazine is already on the way to becoming a respectable publication. Our articles
have been reproduced by other organizations in their publications and we receive requests for copies from researchers. With
your cooperation and timely response and feedback we can make it a jewel in the federation's crown.
Thank
you for your anticipated cooperation.
